Baroque Art Interpretation

17th century artists, architects and musicians didn't know or use the word 'Baroque'. Why do we do that now, and what do we mean by that? Is it a movement, a historical period or a style? What are its main features?

In the next six weeks we will address these questions by examining artworks made in Europe and will see how a religious controversy prompted new forms of representation, and how the kings and queens of the time found this new language suitable for propaganda.

Each participant will be given a weekly folder made of short videos, reading extracts and paintings to listen/watch before each meeting. You will be asked to go through a set of materials and get ready for the live sessions. The TUTOR WILL NOT LECTURE PARTICIPANTS; rather, he will distribute tasks and give support when needed.

Level of English required: Intermediate . Your tutor will help you with definitions, explanations and hand-outs. It is highly recommended for those who want to improve their English, since all of the new vocabulary will be explained and used in class.

Tutor: Francesco Cisternino (UG Dip in the History of Art, University of Oxford; CertTESOL, Trinity College London)
